When to Vaccinate Your Child
In Ukraine, an updated National Vaccination Calendar came into effect on January 1, 2026, which provides protection against 11 infectious diseases. This is the primary vaccination calendar in Ukraine, which outlines the mandatory immunization timelines against tuberculosis, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, poliomyelitis, Hib infection, and pneumococcal infection.
Vaccination begins from the first days of life and continues according to the child’s age.
If a child misses a vaccination or was previously vaccinated according to a different calendar, it is usually unnecessary to start the entire course over again. The doctor will help create an individual schedule taking into account the doses already received.
In addition to mandatory vaccinations, a pediatrician may recommend additional immunizations to protect against other infections. Parents should pay attention to the recommended additional vaccinations (for example, against rotavirus infection, meningococci, chickenpox, hepatitis A, human papillomavirus, and seasonal flu), which significantly expand the immune protection of the child.
Timely vaccination for children allows for the formation of a strong immunity to the most dangerous pathogens even before contact with them.
When Vaccination Can Be Postponed
Most children can receive scheduled vaccinations without additional preparation. However, there are conditions under which vaccination should be temporarily postponed or a different approach should be chosen:
- Acute illness with a high fever.
- Severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine or its component.
- Specific immune system disorders or treatments that suppress immunity, depending on the type of vaccine.
A mild cold, runny nose, or slight fever is not always a reason to postpone vaccination.
Some contraindications may be permanent for a specific vaccine. The decision regarding the possibility of vaccination is made by the doctor after evaluating the child's health status and medical history.
How Vaccination Takes Place at “Dobrobut”
Before vaccination, the doctor:
- Clarifies information about the child's health status, previous vaccinations, and possible allergic reactions.
- Assesses the presence of contraindications.
- If necessary, conducts an examination and measures temperature.
- Discusses the vaccine, possible reactions, and further actions.
- Coordinates the next steps of vaccination with the parents.
In the absence of contraindications, the vaccination can take place during the same visit. To ensure that the basic vaccination calendar in Ukraine is fully completed, the doctor will assist you directly during the examination. After vaccination, it is recommended to stay in the medical facility for at least 30 minutes to monitor for possible immediate reactions.
What to Do at Home After Vaccination
After vaccination, temporary reactions of the body may occur: pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, fever, fatigue, or decreased appetite. Typically, such manifestations resolve on their own within a few days. The timing and duration of their appearance depend on the specific vaccine.
- Monitor the child’s well-being.
- Offer a sufficient amount of fluids.
- Do not force the child to eat if the appetite has temporarily decreased.
- If necessary, use antipyretics or pain relief medication according to age and doctor’s recommendations.
- Do not give aspirin to children without a doctor’s special instructions.
- Keep the information about the vaccination and the date of the next vaccination.
- It is not necessary to give preventive antipyretics before vaccination without a doctor's recommendation.
To ensure that children feel maximally protected in child care settings, pediatricians recommend expanding basic protection and timely administering recommended additional vaccinations.
When to Seek Medical Help
Immediate medical help is needed if the child experiences after vaccination:
- Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat.
- Seizures or loss of consciousness.
- Severe lethargy, altered consciousness, or unusual lack of response to conversation.
- Other signs of a severe allergic reaction.
In such cases, it is necessary to call emergency medical assistance at 103 or urgent care “Dobrobut” at 5288.
Contact a doctor also in case of high fever, prolonged inconsolable crying, repeated vomiting, refusal to drink, or other symptoms that cause concern. For infants under three months, a temperature of 38 °C and above requires urgent medical assessment.
Most reactions after vaccination are mild and short-lived. The doctor will explain in advance what manifestations may occur after a specific vaccine and when to seek help.
