Pyloric stenosis
Pyloric stenosis is a narrowing of the pyloric section of the stomach, resulting in an obstacle to the movement of food from the stomach into the intestines. Most often, the disease is congenital, and very rarely acquired as a result of stomach ulcers or cicatricial narrowing after a chemical burn. The congenital disease is more common in boys than in girls. With this pathology, there is a thickening of the pylorus muscles, as a result of which food does not enter the child's small intestine. At 2-3 weeks of life, the baby begins to show the first symptoms, the dominant of which is severe vomiting. The condition of a child suffering from pyloric stenosis worsens due to dehydration and weight loss, so if treatment is not taken in time, it can very quickly reach critical.
Causes of occurrence
To date, the exact etiology of the disease is unknown. Pyloric stenosis is considered a multifactorial pathology, the appearance of which is influenced by hereditary factors and adverse effects on the fetus during pregnancy. Risk factors for the development of pyloric stenosis in a newborn can be intrauterine infections (rubella, cytomegaly, herpes), an increased level of gastrin in the mother, treatment of the child with antibacterial drugs (especially erythromycin) in the first weeks of life.
Symptoms of pyloric stenosis in young children
- copious, repeated, gushing vomiting - and the amount of vomit usually exceeds the amount of food eaten;
- rare urination;
- constipation;
- pallor, loss of skin elasticity, dehydration.
When a baby develops symptoms of pyloric stenosis, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible so as not to bring it to a critical state.
Treatment
Treatment of pyloric stenosis in children is based on a surgical operation - pylorotomy. The surgeon excises the muscle layer of the sphincter and widens the opening of the pylorus, allowing food to pass freely into the duodenum. The operation can be performed in an open way or laparoscopically. Usually, specialists give preference to laparoscopic surgery, since it is less traumatic, and recovery after it is much faster.
The specialists of the MN Dobrobut clinics in Kyiv have extensive experience in conducting pylorotomy, both open and laparoscopic.
