Three Compelling Reasons to Get the Flu Shot During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Every year with the onset of autumn, we mentally prepare for the SARS and flu season and hope that we will be able to overcome it without unnecessary worries and dangers. And protection against the flu in such a situation comes first, because this disease can have very serious consequences. This year, the #1 health enemy for all of us was the Covid-19 virus, but against the background of this dangerous disease, it is still worth remembering about other threats. And what is most important – remember how we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from such threats as, for example, the flu. So let's talk about why flu vaccination during a pandemic will definitely come in handy.

It is worth remembering that the flu – this is a rather serious disease that occurs in both adults and children. The flu is especially dangerous for people who are at risk: pregnant women, people with diabetes or other chronic diseases. For those people who do not belong to these groups, vaccination is also recommended, because it protects the health of these people and contributes to the formation of collective immunity to the virus.

If we talk about the flu in the world of the Covid-19 pandemic, at the moment we do not know for sure whether it is possible to be infected with the flu and the coronavirus disease virus at the same time. However, we definitely understand that such a course of events is highly likely to be more difficult, and such a person will be more difficult to treat with the risk of serious complications. In the same way, getting the flu weakens a person's immunity quite a lot, and then the body can be more susceptible to Covid-19 after having the flu. Unfortunately, today the only real way to protect yourself from coronavirus infection is to observe all hygienic norms and social distancing measures, because there is no specific vaccine against the virus yet. Therefore, in a situation where we have no protection against this threat, the ability to protect ourselves from the flu virus with the help of an effective vaccine can really protect not only from possible complications, but also save life.

In an epidemiological sense, autumn this year is really ""hot"": the rapid spread of Covid-19, the season of flu and other SARS. And in the treatment of any disease, operative and accurate diagnosis is important, which can help preserve health in a timely manner. In the case of these diseases, the situation is somewhat complicated, because the symptoms of the disease can be very similar or even the same. In this case, influenza vaccination can help to quickly and correctly diagnose the disease. For example, if a person with symptoms of an acute respiratory viral infection came to see a therapist, but had previously been vaccinated against the flu, we can immediately consider other options – and, first of all, the coronavirus disease, which in turn will help to move to treatment more quickly.

I quite often come across the opinion among patients that flu vaccination – it is a complicated process and unnecessary trouble. In fact, influenza vaccination does not require any special preparation. This is a non-living vaccine, so it has practically no contraindications or warnings. And the availability of the vaccine is high – this year, three vaccines are relevant, and ""Dobrobuta"", for example, currently has ""Influvak"" and “Jisi Flu”. We are waiting for the delivery of the vaccine ""Vaksigrip Tetra"" until the end of October.

But the effectiveness of vaccination is not only about protecting your health. In such situations, we should think not only about ourselves, but also about our parents, children, friends, colleagues and other people close to us. If one person gets sick with the flu or any other SARS, the risks increase for everyone around. For the maximum protection of the population against the flu, it is necessary that as many people as possible be vaccinated. Vaccination is not just what we need here and now to overcome this epidemiological season. With each new person who chooses to get a flu shot, we move closer to collective protection against the disease. And this year, unfortunately, the risks are twofold. So think in time about your protection and the protection of your loved ones and take care of yourself.
