Proctologist and leader of Dobrobut Surgery, Yuriy Lovitsky, spoke at the 11th Congress of the World Emergency Surgery Organization in Greece. This large-scale event brings together the best emergency surgeons from around the world to discuss and identify the main trends in the industry.

This year, medical leaders paid special attention to the problems of treating advanced peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity), which can occur as a result of various diseases such as appendicitis, ulcers, intestinal obstruction and acute cholecystitis. It seemed that these diseases had long been studied. But there is one important “but”.

At this conference, doctors are discussing pathologies that have existed as long as surgery has existed. The main goal of this approach is to make diagnostics more accurate and treatment less traumatic.

“While we are used to minimally invasive interventions in routine surgery, in emergency surgery they are significantly inferior to open surgery. One of the reasons is that there is not always access to expensive equipment and supplies when they are needed here and now. But every year, more and more urgent pathologies in the world are being treated with minimally invasive methods”, explains Yuriy.

Our doctor told us about his experience of performing laparoscopic surgery for scarring (adhesions) inside the abdomen, which can stick the intestines together. This pathology leads to a disruption of the normal functioning of the organ, because the intestines are strongly constricted due to adhesions, and this prevents the passage of food. Experience shows that patients who underwent laparoscopy for adhesive intestinal obstruction recovered much faster, experienced less pain and recovered faster.

“In Ukraine, emergency surgery is very unpopular among doctors. Difficult work schedules and difficult patients quickly demotivate. For me personally, emergency surgery is the most emotional. These are the cases when the satisfaction from the work comes immediately. When a patient who was in pain 6 hours ago asks what time dinner is, you understand why this is a matter of life for many people”, Yuriy Lovitsky shares his impressions.
