Nasal polypotomy: indications, types, effectiveness

Removal of nasal polyps is a surgical intervention that is often performed in otolaryngology. After surgery to remove sinus polyps and other structures, the patient begins to feel the taste of life again. And here's why.

Acute inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory system are more common than other nosologies. They not only lead to physiological discomfort, but also provoke a number of other diseases. Among the pathological conditions is the growth of soft tissues of the nasal cavity in the form of polyps - thin growths of various lengths. The causes of their occurrence have not been fully studied, but medical statistics show that polyps often appear after chronic sinusitis or chronic sinusitis - an inflammatory process in the frontal or maxillary sinus, respectively.

Otolaryngology has developed various methods for removing nasal polyps. Initially, doctors tried to cure patients of polyps in other ways, but came to the conclusion that surgical removal of such growths is the most effective, since even a small polyp does not dissolve when exposed to medications locally or when taken orally.

Why you should remove polyps in the nose

If a single polyp has grown in the nose, it does not increase in size and does not affect respiratory function - the operation can be postponed and medical tactics can be reduced to observation. But ideally, polypotomy should not be delayed, because polyps (especially multiple ones) provoke symptoms that are incompatible with the concept of physiological comfort. The following symptoms are observed with polyps

  • persistent nasal congestion, which leads to shortness of breath and a raspy voice;
  • pain in the area of maxillary sinuses;
  • a feeling that there is a foreign body in the nose (this is especially true for children who try to pull out a “foreign body” from the nose and thus may injure the mucous membrane)
  • impaired sense of smell;
  • constant nasal discharge.

If polypotomy was not performed and the disease progressed, this can lead to more serious consequences for the patient:

  • sooner or later, a complete absence of nasal breathing is recorded;
  • polyps can grow to such an extent that they can hang down the throat;
  • headache, often persistent, appears against the background of pain in the maxillary sinuses;
  • the sense of smell can disappear altogether, which leads to serious consequences;
  • malignization - malignant degeneration of polyps - is possible.

Endoscopic nasal polypotomy in the clinic and other methods of polyp removal will help to cope with such problems, as discussed below.

Methods of polyp removal in the nose

The most common methods by which patients are relieved of polypoid growths in the nose are

  • mechanical
  • laser
  • radio wave;
  • cryo method;
  • endoscopic.

Mechanical method - removal of growths using a scalpel or polyp loop. It is used less and less often, most often in cases where there is no technical possibility to perform removal by other means or multiple growth of polyps is observed.

Laser removal of nasal polyps is one of the most common types of this operation. Advantages of this method:

  • It can be used on an outpatient basis without hospitalization;
  • The laser beam not only “cuts out” unnecessary tissue, but also stops bleeding immediately;
  • the operation itself takes little time - about 20 minutes;
  • there are practically no recurrences after laser removal.

The radio wave method is the destruction of polyp tissue using radio waves. The main indications for its implementation are the formation of single polyps.

Cryomethodology is the destruction of overgrown tissues using low temperatures. In particular, liquid nitrogen is used. This is an alternative way to remove polypoid growths in the nasal cavities.

Endoscopic removal of polyps in the nose is performed using an endoscope - a thin flexible tube with a built-in optical system. This method is chosen in case of:

  • difficult access to polyps;
  • their significant growth;
  • the need for the most gentle tissue manipulation (access is carried out intranasally - through the nasal passages).

During endoscopic polyp removal, a shaver is used - a tool with interchangeable cutting nozzles that allows making tissue cuts with an accuracy of 1 millimeter. Despite the progressiveness and innovation of the method, the cost of removing nasal polyps with a shaver is absolutely affordable.

Only a qualified doctor can recommend the best method of polyp removal after examining the patient.

The nose is a delicate organ, so to perform polyp removal surgery, you should visit a clinic with highly qualified specialists who have extensive experience in performing this surgical intervention.
