Pediatric urology

When is a pediatric urologist needed?

A significant number of childhood urological diseases are congenital. Developmental abnormalities of the genitourinary system can develop while still in the womb. Such abnormalities will be the first thing a prenatal ultrasound specialist will look for. Furthermore, genital abnormalities in boys and girls can manifest as early as 4-5 years of age, and later, as late as 12-15 years.

The majority of diseases, such as developmental anomalies of the kidneys and bladder, penile curvature, cryptorchidism, are congenital. These and many other pathologies are corrected surgically in the children's urology department of the "Dobrobut" Medical Network. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, the higher the chances of successful treatment and restoration of organ function so that there are no issues in adulthood.

Symptoms. What to pay attention to?

  • Painful increased urination in children, urinary incontinence.
  • Changes in urine test results — increased levels of leukocytes.
  • Unexplained fever.
  • Pain in the lower back or abdomen.
  • Changes in urine color, unpleasant odor.
  • In boys: asymmetry of the scrotum (enlargement or reduction); phimosis (narrowing of the foreskin).

If at least one of the listed symptoms is present, it is necessary to consult a pediatric urologist.

Additionally, parents should know that many urological diseases in children occur without symptoms, without any changes in urine composition, and without noticeable anomalies in the structure of the genital organs. In such cases, deviations from the norm can only be detected through instrumental diagnostic methods.

We recommend: children at the age of 1 year undergo ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder; perform urine tests before significant events in the child's life — the first birthday, vaccinations, and starting school. Boys at the age of one, as well as after reaching 12-13 years, should have an examination by a urology specialist.

Diagnosis

In the "Dobrobut" Medical Network, modern safe equipment of the highest precision is used for diagnosing urological diseases in children.

Diagnostic methods:

  • Ultrasound — the functioning of the kidneys is examined;
  • Micturition cystography — a radiological study that identifies structural anomalies of the bladder and ureter.
  • Uroflowmetry — the functions and performance of the bladder are examined.

All examinations are conducted on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization.

Treatment

Surgical Treatment:

  • minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries (no incisions);
  • open surgeries with minimal incisions;
  • plastic and reconstructive surgeries of the genitals;

Medication Treatment.

In surgical treatment, the so-called "minor" anesthesia is used – a short medicinal sleep. Awakening after such anesthesia is easy, without side effects. There is no need for a prolonged postoperative period. In most cases, the child only needs to stay in the hospital for two hours, and parents can take her home.

Special attention is paid by specialists to the psychological state of the child during her stay in the urology department of the Medical Center "Dobrobut." Children are surrounded by the attention and care of the medical staff. We work in close contact with the parents.
