MRI and CT for children

When choosing a research method for children, we primarily prioritize the health of the child. MRI and CT are very similar methods in essence and outcome, but their working principles differ fundamentally: CT uses X-rays to obtain the final image, while MRI uses a strong magnetic field. The indications and contraindications for performing computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for children are almost the same as those defined for adults, except that CT is only attempted in specific cases for children due to the radiation exposure during the procedure. When conducting MRI, there is no radiation exposure to the child and, consequently, it does not have any negative impact on the child's health. The examinations can be carried out on a planned basis and in emergency situations. More detailed information on this issue can be found on our clinic's website: https://dobrobut.com/

Is there a risk from using CT and MRI of the brain in children?

Yes, there is a possibility. As mentioned above, with CT, the child receives radiation exposure, unlike with MRI. However, there are a number of situations where the use of CT is absolutely justified. For example, acute injuries are best visualized with CT of the head in children, and lung pathologies, as well as bone structures, are predominantly studied using CT since MRI has certain limitations in several similar studies.

Regarding the examination of congenital anomalies in the brain development of children and assessing the overall condition of the brain parenchyma, brainstem, and cerebellum, in these cases, MRI "outperforms" CT in terms of final informative content.

Features of conducting head examinations in children

CT and MRI of the brain in children have a number of peculiarities. During the procedure, the child's head is in a closed space, so potential fear and panic attacks should be anticipated. To prevent this, the young patient is explained what they will experience. Relatives or close ones can stay with the child. Their presence, in most cases, helps the child cope with fear.

If it is necessary to conduct the examination under anesthesia, pediatric anesthesiologists assist with the state of medical sleep.

Some difficulties arise from the need to conduct vascular studies of the head. Conventional angiography has a number of contraindications due to the introduction of contrast agents into the vascular system. To avoid such negative consequences, the most modern tomographs, such as those used in our clinic, have the function of non-invasive angiographic study using MRI of the child's brain and head vessels, meaning that the administration of contrast agents into the vein is not performed.

When is anesthesia necessary for CT and MRI?

The use of medical sleep – anesthesia – may be required for children in the case of:

  • infants – up to 12 months;
  • presence of fears and anxiety;
  • mental disorders with inadequate behavior;
  • seizure conditions.

With modern machines, CT and MRI procedures for children are becoming increasingly comfortable and safe. The research helps to identify existing pathologies at the initial stage of development, so do not neglect this type of diagnostics – consult specialists in a timely manner.
