Boils / Karbunkuli appearance

Boils / Karbunkuli appearance

On the basis of LDC "Dobrobut" str. There is an inpatient department of otorhinolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery at Simii Idzikovskikh, 3. Otolaryngologists and maxillofacial surgeons conduct daily appointments in polyclinics and hospitals.

One of the most common problems with which patients turn is purulent-inflammatory diseases of the maxillofacial area. An unsuccessfully squeezed "pimple" quite often ends with a visit to a maxillofacial surgeon.

A furuncle is an acute purulent-necrotic inflammation of a hair follicle or sebaceous gland and surrounding connective tissue. A carbuncle is an acute purulent-necrotic inflammation of several adjacent hair follicles or sebaceous glands and their surrounding tissues, spreading into the subcutaneous tissue.

The main reasons for the appearance of these diseases are:

  • skin pollution;
  • microtraumas of the skin (scratches, combing, etc.);
  • hyperfunction of sweat and sebaceous glands of the skin;
  • hypovitaminosis;
  • metabolic disorders, etc.

The main microbial pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus.

If there are several furuncles, this disease is called furunculosis, which can be local (for example, localized only on the face) and systemic (several areas of damage - face, neck, abdomen, hips, etc.).

In the maxillofacial region, boils/carbuncles are most often localized on the skin of the lips, nose, and chin, less often on the skin of the cheeks, forehead, etc.

Clinically, several stages of the formation of furuncles/carbuncles are distinguished, depending on these stages, patients have the following complaints:

  • redness of the skin;
  • pain, itching, a feeling of swelling of the skin in the affected area;
  • increase and pain of regional lymph nodes;
  • increased body temperature;
  • purulent secretions in the affected area;
  • swelling of soft tissues;
  • deterioration of well-being, etc.

The main task of the maxillofacial surgeon is to prescribe complex treatment of this disease - antibacterial and anti-inflammatory therapy, surgical opening and drainage of the boil/carbuncle, daily control and dressing of the lesion. In most cases, the treatment of such patients is outpatient, but in severe cases - inpatient.
