CT scan of the chest cavity
CT of the thoracic organs is performed at the direction of a specialist. During the study, the thoracic organs are scanned: lungs, mediastinum, chest wall, heart (examination), lymph nodes, and spine in the visualization area. Indications for this type of CT include diseases, particularly neoplasms of the thoracic organs.
Preparation for the Study
No special preparation is required for the CT study of the thoracic organs. However, the procedure has several contraindications. For example, a severe general condition of the patient may be a contraindication. For pregnant women and children, the study is conducted only after the referring physician assesses the balance between the diagnostic value of the study to be conducted and the potential harm that may result from exposure to ionizing radiation. The final decision on the appropriateness of conducting the examination and its scope is made by the radiologist.
In cases of significant general agitation of the patient, the use of anesthesia may be considered.
Results of the study (film, description, record of the complete study on an optical storage medium) are issued two hours after the scanning. If it involves a complex diagnostic case or an additional consultation is required, the results of the study are issued within a day after the scanning.
