Causes and treatment of sore throat in children and adults

A sore throat can be a sign of various processes in the respiratory system and not only. Sometimes it goes away in a couple of hours, and sometimes it can be quite prolonged. In order to eliminate the cause of constant throat scratch, it is almost always necessary to consult a good otolaryngologist and certainly not recommended self-medication.

The main cause of this symptom is irritation of the nerve endings of the mucous membrane of the larynx. The cause of irritation can be:

  • physical overload of the vocal cords;
  • acute and chronic infections of the larynx;
  • traumas - mechanical, thermal, chemical;
  • neoplasms - both the larynx itself and organs located in the neighborhood (thyroid nodules, varicose veins in the larynx);
  • severe forms of allergies (Quincke's edema);
  • some neurotic conditions;
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (frequent heartburn, leading to constant irritation of the mucous membranes of the oropharynx and larynx with hydrochloric acid of gastric juice);
  • overdose of expectorants;
  • smoking;
  • prolonged stay in dusty and polluted places, etc.

All these processes can lead to mechanical, chemical or physical irritation of the mucous membrane, and it responds to this cough reflex. Quite often it can be a simple cough, although sometimes the cough can be excruciating, not allowing normal inhalation.

Such remedies are known quite a lot, but it is necessary to decide which one to use very carefully. After all, if this symptom is caused by cancer pathology, then any of your actions without consulting a doctor are doomed to worsen the course of the disease. Nevertheless, you can quickly get rid of the throat fever in most cases without hospitalization or surgery.

Dryness and sore throat at night

This occurs most often if the air in the house is characterized by low humidity. It is enough to moisturize it, and the sore throat will stop. Another thing, if the symptom occurs as a result of gastroesophageal reflux disease - here it is necessary to treat not the symptom, but the disease itself. Antacids (almagel, phosphalugel), anti-ulcer agents (famotidine, omeprazole and their analogues), antispasmodics (drotaverine, papaverine), as well as metoclopramide, which normalizes the motor function of the digestive system. It is important to follow and gentle diet, healthy lifestyle, limiting physical exertion, which increases the pressure in the abdominal cavity.

With frequent and prolonged heartburn is associated with a fever in the throat and in pregnancy. Only childbirth will help to cure it. And to reduce the frequency of heartburn will help to sleep in a half-sitting position and taking antacids. Just do not drink soda: carbon dioxide released by its contact with gastric juice, stretches the entrance of the esophagus to the stomach and provokes a recurrence of heartburn.

Treatment of a sore throat in a child

In children, most often this symptom occurs due to colds. Fight it in the same way as with any viral infection. In this case, apply:

  • antiviral agents;
  • antibiotics in confirmed bacterial nature of pathology;
  • immunomodulators (their effectiveness is not proven, but they are widely used in our country);
  • expectorants (mukaltin, ambroscol, bromhexine, acetylcysteine);
  • analgesics and antipyretics (paracetamol or ibuprofen, aspirin is contraindicated before 15 years of age);
  • oral antiseptics (Strepsils, Travisil and analogs).

Tablets from a feverish throat for adults and children help to remove the symptom, but not quickly. It will take several days (most often 2-3) before the treatment has an effect.
If the signs of trouble in the throat last for months and years, it means that the cause must be sought more carefully. It is necessary to find out whether a person is not in dusty or gassy conditions for a long time (for example, workers of cement production, auto mechanics, etc.), whether there is no allergy to something with which a person comes into contact on a daily basis (household dust, animal hair, for medical workers - latex). In the first case, the only cure for a severe throat scratch is a change of occupation. In the second case - getting rid of the allergen and taking antihistamines to eliminate the perspiration.

It is a little more difficult, if the throat is scratchy due to compression of it by other organs. With nodular goiter may require surgical removal of the nodes, with varicose veins - their sclerosing (if possible), clipping or subtle

vascular surgery. In addition, the cause of varicosis is eliminated - the rise in pressure in the portal vein system. To do this, diuretics are prescribed, removing excess fluid from the bloodstream and reducing the pressure due to this.

It is hardest when perspiration is associated with an organic lesion of the nervous system (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis). In this case, the usual symptomatic treatment is useless, and the fight against the described diseases is extremely difficult. But it is the treatment of these diseases will help if not to remove the perspiration completely, then at least make it tolerable.
