Test for the Determination of influenza A + B

Influenza can start suddenly and be accompanied by a rapid increase in temperature, chills, headaches, muscle pain, pronounced weakness, and cough. Since similar symptoms also occur with other acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI), quality laboratory testing helps quickly determine the exact cause of the illness and avoid mistakes in therapy.

The express test for the detection of influenza viruses types A and B is a modern diagnostic study that allows for the presence of viral antigens to be detected within minutes. The test result provides the doctor with comprehensive information for a quick assessment of the patient's condition and the selection of effective antiviral treatment. In the clinics of the medical network "Dobrobut", we conduct the flu A and B test according to clear international protocols, ensuring the accuracy of results and comfort during the procedure.

When is it recommended to take the test?

A doctor may recommend testing for influenza A and B in the presence of symptoms characteristic of an acute viral infection:

  • sudden rise in body temperature to high levels;
  • chills and pronounced general weakness;
  • severe headache and muscle or joint pain;
  • dry exhausting cough;
  • sore throat or irritation;
  • runny nose or nasal congestion.

The study is particularly useful if its result impacts further treatment strategies, as well as for children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and patients with chronic illnesses who are at increased risk of complications.

How is the test conducted?

For the study, a nurse takes a sample of biological material (swab) from the nose or nasopharynx using a sterile disposable swab. The procedure takes only a few seconds and does not cause pain.

Key stages and features of the testing process:

  • The rapid antigen test for influenza A and B provides results within 10–15 minutes.
  • To obtain the most accurate result, it is important to conduct the procedure within the first 24–48 hours after the onset of the first symptoms, when the concentration of viral particles in the mucous membrane is highest.
  • Our specialists strictly adhere to the collection technology and the instructions for the test systems, which minimizes the likelihood of error.

No special complex preparation is required before taking the swab, but it is advisable to avoid nasal rinsing and the use of drops or sprays 1–2 hours before the test.

What do the results mean?

Interpretation of the results is always performed by a doctor, correlating them with the clinical picture:

Positive result. Confirms the presence of antigens of the corresponding type of influenza virus (A or B). This allows the doctor to immediately prescribe targeted direct antiviral medications.

Negative result. Means that the test did not detect antigens of the influenza virus in the tested sample. However, this does not completely rule out influenza if the sample was taken too late or if the virus concentration was low. In the presence of pronounced symptoms, our doctor may recommend repeating the qualitative test for influenza A and B the next day or prescribe additional molecular research (PCR test).

Why is it important to detect influenza in a timely manner?

Timely diagnosis allows for the initiation of specific antiviral therapy within the first 48 hours of the onset of the illness when it is most effective. This significantly alleviates the course of the disease, shortens the recovery period, and prevents the development of severe complications such as pneumonia, otitis, or cardiovascular system damage.

Do not delay a visit to the clinic if symptoms rapidly worsen, shortness of breath occurs, chest pain, altered consciousness, or other threatening signs develop.
